EMERGE Montgomery is a program of Leadership Montgomery.  It is endorsed and supported financially by the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce as part of its Imagine a Greater Montgomery Strategy.

EMERGE Montgomery's Torchbearer Leadership class provides young professionals the skills and connections to become a community leader.  Graduates will support current community activities through service on non-profit boards and commissions and through political involvement.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

CRITERIA

The Torchbearer's Leadership class is a skills-oriented, experiential leadership development program designed to involve, inform and increase the awareness of selected participants through interaction with community decision-makers.  Application does not guarantee selection.  Class size is up to 40 participants for each class, with up to two classes per year.  Class member selection is based on the following criteria:

  • Diverse group of emerging leaders (age group under 40)
  • High standards of personal integrity
  • Demonstrated community involvement or aspirations to become more involved
  • Record of school, career, or personal achievements
  • Commitment of necessary time and effort to complete the program
  • Representation from a cross-section of the population (occupation, race, gender, achievements, community involvement, etc.)

EXTERNAL WORK

During your EMERGE Montgomery Torchbearer experience, you will work in two separate teams:  a Top Five Team, which is assigned at Orientation and will dissolve after the Opening Retreat, and a Community Impact Team, which you will select before the Opening Retreat and will participate in throughout the duration of the EMERGE class.

The objectives of these two teams are as follows:

Top Five Team:

  • To work with classmates to create a Top Five report on a specific sector;
  • To work in a random group that will be assigned before the Orientation;
  • To present a group report at the Opening Retreat.

Community Impact Team:

  • To interact with key community leaders and organizations to identify pressing issues facing the Montgomery community;
  • To develop and implement a plan that directly addresses and positively impacts at least one of the issues your group identifies;
  • To work with class members to select your own sector in which to work;
  • To work with your group to present your final report at the Closing Retreat.

Community Impact Project Overview:

The EMERGE Community Impact Project provides you the opportunity to familiarize yourself with critical issues facing the community, as well as the key agencies, groups, and decision makers influencing these issues.  Your class will divide into five small groups - each focusing on a specific community function.

The five community areas are as follows:

  • Education
  •  Economic Development
  • Good Government
  • Quality of Life
  •  Health and Human Services

 Assignment: partner with an existing organization, identify a critical need within the sector you have selected, and develop and implement a plan to address this critical need within the community.  Group projects will be publicized through Leadership Montgomery and EMERGE Montgomery publications and may be covered by the local media.

Leadership Reading:

Prior to the Orientation, you will be expected to read an assigned book on leadership.  This book, the title of which will be revealed once class selections are made, will guide much of the class discussions on leadership during the course of your class experience.
